Though I’ve only recently started writing about beer, I’ve been writing for several years. Sometimes I write for work, and sometimes I write for pleasure (though not as often as I want or should). I wonder how many beer writers or beer bloggers have come to write about beer in the same way – are you a writer turned beer lover, or a beer lover turned writer?
If you are the former, I would love to know what else you guys and gals write. Essays, fiction, non-fiction, screenplays, sonnets, mock heroics?
I enjoy writing and reading fiction, but I’ve really not written much fiction lately. More often than not these days, I’m toiling with screenplays. A couple years ago, I wrote a short zombie film that did well at various film circuits, and soon I’ll revisit a comedy screenplay that I’ve been sitting on for quite some time. I’ve been toying with the idea of writing a memoir, though I’m not sure anyone would care to read it.
So tell me folks, what else besides beer do you like to write about?
Motorsports and running
I have two other blogs, one about religious issues and the third about anything that pops into my head which doesn’t fit the beer or religious stuff.
I have been trying to write a novel for a while, but find that I can see the film in my head clearer than the book. I have written poetry, had a few published, articles for newspapers, music reviews and several other bits and bobs, so I guess I am a writer turned beer lover.
I also write about religion as well. My educational background is in history of religion and theology. I do academic writing for religion and my hobby is writing about beer. I am fascinated by the relationship between the two.
Hi Daniel, I write a lot . . . drink a beer not so much . . . but Rick does so we both enjoy your blog. Nice job . . . and what a convenient reason to do ‘research’
Hey Kim, thank you guys for reading! Zac told me you had several of your poems published, and I’d love to read them sometime. If I’m not mistaken, he told me Rick was trying his hand at homebrewing — how’s that going? I’ll be trying it soon myself (just gathering up the equipment).
Hey Velky Al, thanks for stopping by! I know exactly what you mean when you say that you can “see” a work as a film or screenplay. I have a few ideas that I knew would work really well as fiction, and then others that I can only see as being written for the screen. I read some of your poetry on one of your blog’s — it’s good stuff. Poetry is something that I read more of then write, but I hope to change that. I find reading and writing poetry can really give you a great ear for language and also the economy of language.
Tim, it’s cool to see the convergence of religion and beer here again. I hate to stereotype an entire people, but here in the South so many religious people think there’s something very sinful about beer — but then again, maybe that’s society in general. Few are the people that realize we enjoy the taste and complexity of beer, and that we aren’t drinking it to get altogether wasted.
Airen and I have a great preacher down here, but it bothered me when a recent lecture had sort of an anti-alcohol bias. To be fair, he was saying more that he didn’t think he — as the leader of the church — should drink. But there was very little talk about moderation. It was as if everyone who drank did so only to get drunk; as if beer was merely a means to an end. I do find various religions, philosophies and mythologies fascinating (and while I realize these three systems of belief are very different, they do share some fascinating characteristics at times).
As for academic writing, it can be quite taxing, but I miss it myself. I’m sure I didn’t have to write as much or as deeply as yourself, but while at UNCA I had to write my share of research papers while majoring in literature. Yesterday, I was actually reminiscing about how nice it could be to grab 10-20 books and lock myself inside a library all day. Sometimes I think the life of a professional scholar would be okay with me (now to find someone to pay for all that education).
Well, I guess you know what I also write about since you cruised by my site, and even Twittered my one of my posts. Thanks. As the name of my blog suggests, I write a fair amount about running, and also write about what ever else I find that has a some connection I notice to beer. Couldn’t find an e-mail address or form on your site, so figured I’d leave a comment here.
Hey Derrick, this is as good a spot as any to comment on.
As I said over on your blog, I really enjoyed the post on how you and your son bond through beer. I’m also a little envious of all you beer runners out there — I keep telling myself I’m going to start running to work off just a few pounds (and in an effort toward better health in general) but I’ve yet to do it.
I think it’s fascinating that so many craft beer enthusiasts are runners or cyclists. It’s a pretty cool connection.
Interesting responses! I kind of got into craft-beer and writing (blogging) at the same time, learning about beer and writing about it. I wish I had some more time to write about other things too, but for now one topic will have to do!
I know what you mean, Scott. I guess I have the time to write, but I really don’t write as often as I should (as you can tell by my lack of posting recently).
Let me know if you do start writing anything else, as I’m a good reader!
